Charleston, is the capital city of West Virginia, and our elected leaders and citizens work every day to develop the city as the cultural, recreational, and business capital of the Appalachian Mountain region where people are known for genuine hospitality.
In addition to being a gateway city for the recreational opportunities in the mountains and rivers throughout the surrounding region, Charleston is a destination in and of itself for culture, recreation, fun and exciting experiences for the whole family and all your friends. For example, Charleston hosted the World’s Strongest Man competition in 2008 and the World Championship Chili Cookoff in 2009.
In recent years, people with a passion for improving our city have helped to create FestivALL Charleston every June, the Charleston Boulevard Rod Run & Doo Wop car show every October, free Friday evening concerts Live on the Levee during the summer and growing neighborhood events in the East End, West Side, Kanawha City and South Hills. In the past decade, Citizens with a vision for building for a better future have led to the creation of the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences and Appalachian Power Park, home of the Class A West Virginia Power. The face of our city will be further transformed in the coming months by a major renovation project in Haddad Riverfront Park, the new Shoenbaum Stage on the riverfront and the Kanawha Trestle Trail project.
